About Me

Meet Jim

I’m Jim Rowell (he/him/his). I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I’m also a loving father, spouse, and sibling. After work, I often recharge by gardening, sitting in nature, reading, or taking a swim.

Before starting my practice, I worked at Austin Family Counseling and at LifeWorks Austin, where I provided therapy services for families, couples, and individuals struggling with issues such as family conflict, abuse, trauma, anxiety, depression, and the stress of everyday life.

I received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Oberlin College and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Texas at Austin. In my past career, I worked as an outdoor educator (“Farmer Jim”), cultivating joy and wonder through gardening with students, teachers, and their families.

My Credentials

  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), #103420

  • MSSW, University of Texas at Austin, 2020

  • BA English, Oberlin College, 2009

  • Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educator

  • Received additional training in Polyvagal Informed Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), and Modular Approach to Therapy for Children with Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, or Conduct Problems (MATCH-ADTC).

My Approach

My approach to counseling is person-centered, warm, authentic, and affirming. Working from a relational-cultural perspective, I prioritize developing an authentic relationship with clients where they can feel heard and are safe to discover and express their true selves. I draw inspiration from nature and root my work in an understanding of neurobiology. I also draw from a more solution-focused model, developing tools to help with current challenges and collaborating on goals and specific steps towards change.

I aspire for this to be a beneficial experience for my clients, and strive to make frequent opportunities to check-in on our progress and receive feedback.

“It is in playing and only in playing that the individual child or adult is able to be creative and to use the whole personality, and it is only in being creative that the individual discovers the self.”

— D.W. Winnicott
